Coláiste na Carraige beaten in Faul Cup final but glad to have Ryan Jones in attendance

Coláiste na Carraige well-beaten in Faul Cup final but glad to have Ryan Jones in attendance

Coláiste na Carraige's Ryan Jones, who was injured in the Faul Cup final last week, with Tyrone legend Peter Canavan, who was present to make a presentation on behalf of Ulster Schools' GAA to Jones

For much of the last week, football was not that important in south-west Donegal after one of the Coláiste na Carraige players was airlifted to hospital with a head injury during their Faul Cup final against Ballybay CC at the Bawnacre Centre, Irvinestown on Monday of last week.

Both sides were back at the Fermanagh venue today, Tuesday, for the re-fixed game and it was good to see the player involved, Ryan Jones, at the game, where he was the recipient of a special presentation from former Tyrone great, Peter Canavan, on behalf of the Ulster Schools' GAA.

The refixture was always going to be a difficult game for Coláiste na Carraige who had to start without the injured Ryan Jones and Evan Campbell. Then after 20 minutes a high tackle saw Shane Callaghan having to leave the action to reduce the Carrick ranks further.

The final scoreline of 6-16 to 0-8 doesn't do justice to the battling qualities of Coláiste na Carraige, but it also reflected the dominance of a very good Ballybay side, for whom Ryan Duffy was the star man.

The writing was on the ball after just a minute when Ballybay had 1-1 on the scoreboard and by half-time they were comfortably in control, leading 3-9 to 0-4. Carrick, to their credit, battled away, with Michael Callaghan and Darren Cunningham in particular, to the fore.

They matched the Ballybay team in the third quarter but lost Evan Bonner to a black card and in the final quarter they conceded another few goals. In the end it didn't matter to a brave Coláiste na Carraige team, who wished Ballybay well in the All-Ireland semi-final.
