Shane McDevitt on the ball for Glenswilly as Cloughaneely's Michael Fitzgerald closes in
Gary McFadden turned in an inspirational display as home side Glenswilly got two valuable home points against wasteful Cloughaneely.
Glenswilly 1-17
Coughaeely 2-9
McFadden landed 0-5 as the lively Falcarragh men surged for a late equaliser in a wind-assisted second half.
Glenswilly centre-back Jack Gallagher was also outstanding for the winners while Cloughaneely pocket-rocket Cillian Gallagher hit two cracking goals-but his side hit ten wides including six in a row in the second half.
But the crucial score in this most entertaining affair came just on the half time whistle when the towering Shaun Wogan flicked a lob from Shane McDevitt to the Cloughaneely net.
Wogan’s wonderful flick put Glenswilly into a 1-10 to 1-4, playing with a strong breeze. And, even though Cloughaneely came within a point of their conquerors, they were just not able to push on for victory despite the best efforts of Gallagher, John Fitzgerald and roaming full-back Mark McAteer.
Glenswilly had the benefit of the breeze in the first half and sprinted to a 0-4 to 0-0 lead by the 11th minute thanks to a soaring effort from the impressive Caoimhinn Marley McFadden.
It took Cloughaneely a full 15 minutes to get on the board as Sean Maguire pointed and the excellent Gallagher made It 0-4 to 0-2.
Glenswilly then lost team captain Cormac Callaghan to a black card for a tackle on Cloughaneely danger man John Fitzgerald. Cloughaneely made full use of the extra man as they were very sharp on the counter and Gallagher put them into a shock one point lead when his rasper hit the top of the Glenswlly net.
Glenswilly were struggling and hit four poor wids as Gallagher put the visitors into a 1-3 to 0-4 lead in the 18th minute. McFadden turned the tide with a great point and Caolan Kelly added another to tie matters as half time beckoned.
Shane McDevitt, Marley and McFadden were on target for Glenswilly with John Fitzgerald replying for Cloughaneely before Wogan’s opportunism pushed the hosts to a 1-10 to 1-4 half lead.
And it was Gallagher again who hit another superb goal for Cloughaneely early in the second half to make this a really interesting encounter. Glenswilly led by 1-11 to 2-4 and the rest of the second half was fought at a frenetic championship type pace. Shaun Curran, Fitzgerald and Gallagher narrowed the gap to a single point as the home team led by 1-12 to 2-8 with ten minutes to go and referee Val Murray played an extra six minutes of time.
But Cloughaneely could only manage another one point as they hit some bad wides. Glenswilly somehow found a second gear as Caolan Kelly increased their lead and Jack Gallagher was also on target after a line ball awarded to Glenswilly that was fiercely contested by the Cloughaneely bench.
Sub Sean Collum got another point for Cloughaneely as they held out for a deserved win. But gritty Cloughaneely will be wondering about all those second half wides.
