Maximum points for Kilcar following victory at Cloughaneely

Following on from the beating Milford on the opening weekend of the Donegal SFC, Kilcar continued their winning ways at Cloughaneely

Kilcar eased onto four points in the Donegal SFC with a win over Cloughaneely at Páirc Naomh Fionnán.

Cloughaneely 0 -7
Kilcar 0-19

Twelve points separated the  teams at the finish with Patrick McBrearty, top scoring for one of the championship favourites with five points. In all, Kilcar had 10 different scorers as they dominated the fixture from the first whistle to the last.

In truth, last year’s IFC winners Cloughaneely had no answer for the fast-running All-County Football League Division 1 champions. Jason McGee kicked the game's opening score inside a minute. But by the time Shaun Curran’s deflected strike off Brian O’Donnell went over the bar some 18 minutes later for Cloughaneely’s second point Kilcar had opened up a 0-10 to 0-2 lead.

Kilcar were relentless in the opening exchanges, playing a fast flowing game and mixing the long with the short delivery they reeled off points in quick succession. Conor Doherty and Eoin McHugh fisted their first two in the opening three minutes and by the time Mark Sweeney stroked over their 10th they had nine different scores.

McBrearty, Ryan McShane, Eoin Cormack, Ciaran McGinley, Ryan and Mark Hugh had posted scores as every line on the team contributed to the scoreboard. Conor Coyle was the other Cloughaneely player to get his name on the score sheet and at half-time, Kilcar led 0-13 to 0-4. Blake McGravey was the standout Cloughaneely attacker in the first half. But alas he was paddling a lone canoe against a well-organised and disciplined defence.

Cloughaneely started with Jason McGee on the edge of the Kilcar square. But with Mark McHugh sweeping front of full-back Brian O’Donnell and playing in a role he won an All-Star, Michael Lynch’s men got little out of a number of high balls pumped into the Kilcar goalmouth. McGee soon moved out the field to a more conventional role.

Kilcar started the second half on the front foot and they had extended their lead out to 12 before McGee landed Cloughaneely’s fifth point, 18 minutes into the second half.

The game fizzled out in the final quarter as Kilcar - for the second week in a row following their win over Milford in Towney - cruised to a comfortable victory with a place in the quarter-finals as good as done and dusted.
