St Michael’s GAA are doing their bit to raise money for the Creeslough tragedy this St Stephen’s Day.

Jamie Hunter and Michael Langan are putting together the finishing touches on preparations that will see the current St Michael’s side take on the 2003 team who were crowned the county and Ulster IFC winners at 12 noon.

Hunter and Donegal forward Langan are part of the club’s seniors with Colm McFadden, Brian McLaughlin, Christy Toye, Mickey McFadden, Dominic Carr, Don Johnston, Shaun and Pat Stewart among those who played on the team who were 0-18 to 0-5 winners over Carndonagh in the 2003 Donegal IFC final.

St Michael's went on to post victory in the Ulster decider over Maghery 1-11 to 0-8 in Clontibret before eventually losing out in the All-Ireland final to Illen Rovers from Cork in 2004.

That brought promotion to the Donegal SFC with the club having remined in their since, coming closest to winning the Dr Maguire cup in 2011, when they lost out to Glenswilly in the final.

Tickets for a raffle will be sold on St Stephen’s Day at both the match in Dunfanaghy and then in Rose’s Bar in Creeslough where the draw will take place. Seamus Coleman has already donated a Republic of Ireland signed jersey, which has been framed by sponsors Frame Masters of Letterkenny.

Creeslough was devastated on Friday, October 7, when an explosion at the local service station resulted in the deaths of 10 people. The comunity has rallied since with St Michael’s GAA club an intricate part, with their clubhouse being opened for drop-in sessions for anyone looking for chat.

Gerard McFadden, a local from Ards, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, awoke the following morning to news of the tragedy and set up a GoFundMe to “to help the families of the deceased and injured through these challenging times ahead”.
