Downings GAA club toasted a memorable year for the club's underage teams at their annual presentation function in the Downings Bay Hotel.

Downings senior players Julie Trearty and Johnny McGroddy were special guests for the event.

Trearty is the Downings senior ladies team and also captained ATU Letterkenny to win a League title.

McGroddy was the Downings senior men's player of the year and lined out for Donegal Under-20s in 2022.

Tanya Roberts-Brown, the Downings Minor Board Chairperson, said 2022 was 'hugely successful' for the club.

“The standard has been set for us within the minor board with both our senior teams being promoted to Division 1 for the first time in 31 years,” Ms Roberts-Brown said.

“We hope that all of you players sitting in front of us now share that dream of playing to that level in the next few years.”

Ms Roberts-Brown paid tribute to the club's coaches and other volunteers, adding that a new sponsor has been secured which will see new kits for all the underage teams in 2023.

The Downings Under-15s won their Division in 2022 and the club's Under-10 girls team got to play at Croke Park.

The support of parents, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, was highlighted and a big round of applause was afforded to the Ukrainian families who have moved into the area.

Ms Roberts-Brown said: “It’s fantastic to see the enjoyment and commitment over the past number of weeks at your training sessions.”

The club has big plans having recently unveiled a new development plan.

Ms Roberts-Brown added: “We hope to see our coaching structure evolve over the next number of months with the introduction of a coaching and games development sub committee.”
