A west Donegal man has appeared in court after being caught driving at 171km/h.

James Sharkey was detected at Coolboy Big, Letterkenny, on April 3, 2023 driving at 171km/h.

The road in question is governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

Sharkey, a 36-year-old with an address at Bayview House, Annagry, was charged with dangerous driving.

Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court that gardai were conducting a speed checkpoint when they detected Sharkey at 11.31pm.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said that, due to the level of speed involved, she was not satisfied to accept a plea to a lesser charge of careless driving.

The case was adjourned until October 16 with a view to having it listed before a visiting judge.
