Rallying star, Kris Meeke has confirmed he will not be taking part in the Donegal International Rally as a mark of respect to his injured co-driver.

The Tyrone ace had been due to compete at the Donegal International Rally, scheduled for June 20-22, for the first time since 2008, but will now not be at the start line, after his planned co-driver, Brian Hoy, was hospitalised in a crash at the Cavan Stages Rally.

Hoy was in the co-driver’s seat alongside Garry Jennings at the Cavan Stages Rally, and the pair were involved in a big crash on one of the stages.

Meeke also referenced events at the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland, which claimed the life of a co-driver, Dai Roberts.

Writing on social media, Meeke said: “Unfortunately, Brian (Hoy) was badly injured last weekend in a rally with Garry Jennings. Out of respect to Brian and the tragic events on the Jim Clark Rally, I felt uneasy to search around for a co-driver who I’d no experience with.

“So finally, we decided to postpone our entry until the future.

“Huge thanks to all who put in the effort to put everything together. Wishing Brian Hoy and Garry Jennings all the strength and recovery.”

Kris Meeke is one of the most accomplished Irish rally drivers in history, but has not competed on Irish soil since 2009. During his career, he has taken part in 106 World Rally Championship events, winning five and appearing on 13 podiums. He has also won 94 individual stages in the World Rally Championship.

He was also the champion of the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Challenge and has twice entered the world-famous Dakar Rally.
