Hotel granted planning permission

A hotel development at a historic fishing lodge in  the Finn Valley has been given the green light.

Donegal County Council granted planning permission for the development a Cloghan Lodge on the River Finn.

The area attracts anglers from all over the world.

The development includes the restoration and extension of  the main Cloghan lodge, which is a protected structure, to provide a 34 bedroom hotel with conference facilities.

It will include conversion of original estate out buildings for use as a pub/restaurant, a new five- bed fisherman's lodge providing budget accommodation for sports visitors; five  Courtyard dwellings and the development of 30 Forest lodges located within a woodland.

The plans by Cloghan Lodge estates include the restoration of historic features and creation of forest Walkways, viewpoints, amenity areas and Parking facilities.

Donegal County Council has granted planning permission with 16 conditions for the €48m development.

No objections to the development  were received  but An Taisce said it believes the 35 woodland lodges to be inappropriate. An Taisce submitted a report as a statutory body which said that while the development of the lodge itself was considered appropriate, the 35 lodges would have a “ significant cumulative impact which would result in a severe loss of character to the overlap demesne and detract from the amenities of Cloghan Lodge and its environs.”

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes Cloghan Lodge as a well-wooded modest demesne at the confluence of the Reelan and Finn rivers. A house built on the site in1836 was burnt in 1911 and rebuilt. The railway cut through the west side in mid 19th century.
