There's a “good chance” that Donegal will have a White Christmas this year, a former postman has said.
Michael Gallagher of Cloghan is famed far and wide for his ability to predict the weather based on centuries old traditions of observing nature.
He's even written books on the subject.
As for this winter, Michael predicted in September that it would be a cold one. He told That's Farming, “There is a strong indicator that it will be very cold this winter. It’ll be extremely cold.” At that stage, however, he didn't think that Ireland would get as much snow as was being predicted for the UK.
Last month, he told the Irish News he believes snow is on the way.
“We had a relatively rain-free summer, we’re getting and will continue to get a mild autumn. Both of those indicate that we’ll get a quick cold-snap in the last week of November. This cold cycle won’t break, for temperatures will generally dip well below zero as a result.
“My prediction, judging by past decades of similar previous conditions, is that we will get heavy rainfall mid to late December and temperatures will turn the rain to snow.” Michael told the Democrat this week he's standing by his forecast.
As for the bookies, Boyle Sports are giving 5/1 odds for a White Christmas in Belfast, but only 11/2 for Dublin.
