There is no budget to deal with dangerous trees falling at the popular Bank Walk in Donegal Town, members of Donegal Municipal District were told at their meeting on Tuesday.
Roads Engineer Mark Sweeney, referring to recent reports in the Donegal Democrat on the state of the trees at the Old Bank Walk in Donegal town, told the members that he had no budget to deal with this problem.
Mr. Sweeney said that he was acutely aware of the problem but given the fact that it was neither a road nor a footpath, there was no provision for it in budgetary terms.
“The simple fact is that many of these trees are coming to the end of their lives. If we were to bring in a tree surgeon I am sure he would condemn the whole lot of them.”
Mr. Sweeney requested a budget for this specific situation and after discussion €10,000 was allocated to remove some of the trees that had already subsided into the river and to investigate any possible solutions for the remaining trees.
He also assured members that younger trees could be planted in the area.
On March 22nd the Democrat, in a front page story headlined “Fears of 'Bank' collapse in Donegal, highlighted the fact that the popular walking area was under threat with trees toppling as the ground underneath them gives way. The report added that locals had expressed fears that it could lead to a landfall and the collapse of a lot of ground, endangering the use of the walk.
