If you are looking to run a personal best for the half marathon in 2022, then this year's Donegal Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, August 28, is the race for you.

Race director, Brendan McDaid, announced this week that in an order to make the course flatter and faster, the climb up Port Road, which has been part of the annual event since it was first held in 2014, has been taken out.

This means that the race will have a new starting point at Conwal straight, a short distance past Ballymacool Town Park and exactly one mile from the Aura Leisure Centre where the race will be headquartered.

"We carried out a survey of those who took part in the 2021 Donegal Half Marathon and took their views on board," the race director said.

"We looked at different ways of improving the course and after a lot of planning, we've devised a route we feel is conducive to fast times. The two main changes will see the removal of the climb up Port Road and the large loop of the course being done the opposite way.

"The combination of these two changes has resulted in a new start line at the start of the Conwal straight. There will be a flat four miles in and around the town before the competitors head over the Oldtown Bridge, out Bomany and New Mills and through Rashedog before coming back into town along the main Glenties Road via Tullygay and Conwal and finishing on the Danny McDaid Track at Aura," he added.

The Kernan Group is the event's main sponsor again this year. The third in a series of monthly draws for a €30 Kernan's voucher, a hamper filled with Spar's own-brand products, and a goody bag sponsored by Donegal Sports Partnership for those who have entered takes place on Tuesday, June 28.
