A lorry driver was left 'scared' after having to reverse his 30-foot truck from the top of the Market Square in Letterkenny.

An issue regarding the visibility of signage for heavy goods vehicles in the area was raised at the January meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh tabled a motion asking that the Council 'provide better signage to ensure that heavy vehicles do not attempt driving down Market Square'.

“There is a sign at the pedestrian crossing at the Cathedral, but maybe we could get one further up,” Councillor Kavanagh said.

“A 30-foot lorry, with another trailer on, the guy driving was nearly at the top of the Market Square when he stopped.

“He had an awful job of getting back up. The driver was fairly scared trying to get back up. It is extremely dangerous. It would have been a whole lot worse if had got down; the whole town would have been held up.”

“We need an earlier warning than the sign that is there.”

The motion was seconded by Councillor Gerry McMonagle, who said: “It's a narrow road and when you get to the square there is no way out.”
