Councillor's plea - "Let's save the St Patrick's Day Parade"

St Patrick's Day 2019

A new committee is needed to save the St Patrick's Day parade

Cllr Barry Sweeny (FG) is leading the charge to save Ballyshannon's St Patrick's Day parade and he is calling on members of the community to roll up their sleeves.

He said: "The parade committee stepped down in December after many years of hard work and dedication to ensure Ballyshannon's parade and celebrations were organised and went ahead.

"This year's parade is now in doubt and I am calling a meeting to invite interested people in the locality who are willing to roll up their sleeves and form a working group that will lead to a new committee being set up.

"We must ensure that the Parade goes ahead in 2023 and beyond."

The meeting will be held in Dorrian's Hotel, this Thursday, January 19 at 8pm.

"If you feel you have something to contribute, organisation skills, marketing, Social Media, stewarding, physical help leading up to the day, administration, financial experience, then please put your hand up and come along on Thursday at 8pm," said Cllr Sweeny.

"A debt of gratitude is due to the stalwarts and committee members over the years who made this happen for the good of the town and community.

"It is a very enjoyable day for so many of us, our schools, clubs, societies, bands and it's great to celebrate our primary patron Saint.

"...and then we'll sort out a St Bridgid's festival. But one step at a time!"
