Former Highland Radio presenter Shaun Doherty has been ordained at St Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry.
Having stepped aside from his broadcasting role in Letterkenny back in 2017, where he had worked for 27 years, Doherty later announced his plans to join the priesthood and last year was ordained a Deacon in St Paul’s Basilica in Rome. Since then, he studied in Rome and the ordination was celebrated by the Bishop of Derry, the Most Reverend Donal McKeown.
The Iosas Centre and Celtic Prayer Centre near Muff will host a celebration and the newly-ordained Fr Doherty will celebrate Mass at St Columb's Church, Chapel Road, Waterside on Monday at 7.30pm, serving in the Derry Diocese.
His show, The Shaun Doherty Show, won a PPI Radio Award in 2001 and Doherty, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, was nominated for broadcaster of the year in 2006. Previously, he worked with Donegal Community Radio (DCR) before Highland Radio got its broadcasting license in 1990.
