For the second time in three months, Clareden Drive in Donegal Town has been hit by flooding as a result of torrential rain.
The latest flooding occurred with the onset of Storm Bert, and emergency services worked to clear water from the area on Saturday morning.
Funding was granted in May 2023 for a major flood relief scheme, following much lobbying by councillors and staff at Donegal County Council.

Among those spearheading the campaign was Cllr Noel Jordan (SF). He is now calling for the scheme to be fast-tracked.
“As we all know, the scheme was allocated but there are a number of phases to go through and it is taking too long to get to the construction stage,” he told Donegal Live. “A lot of it is red tape and bureaucracy.
“This type of flooding situation is becoming a regular occurrence with climate change having a big effect.
“We need this scheme to be fast-tracked as a matter of urgency. I know there is a consultation process and other processes such as engagement with Inland Fisheries Ireland, dealing with objections etc.
“But this is an urgent situation. We need construction to begin on this scheme if we are to protect not just Clareden Drive, but Donegal Town from the effects of climate change. “
Cllr Jordan expressed his gratitude to the fire service for getting out quickly and alleviated the flooding.
But he warned: “There is more severe weather forecast for this evening. The fear is there that this will bring fresh flooding.”
Clarendon Drive is close to the River Eske, which regularly bursts its banks in heavy rainfall. Furthermore it is prone to the effects of tidal surges, and being in a natural dip, to water flowing down adjacent roads and fields.
