Gardaí are warning the public to be aware of scam callers

Donegal gardaí are warning the public to be aware of scam callers pretending to be from the finance app Revolut.

Gardaí are now asking members of the public to spread awareness of these types of scams to help protect those who may be vulnerable to them.

“They may say that there was 'suspicious activity' on your account e.g. an attempt was made to purchase goods and they ask you to verify the transaction,” explained Garda Gráinne Doherty. “They then try to obtain your personal account details to try to 'fix' the issue, or they may ask you to transfer your funds to a new account that they claim is "safe". In some instances, they call out the first few digits of your Revolut card to you and then ask you to provide the remaining numbers.”

Scammers often use tactics to create a sense of urgency or panic to pressure people into handing over personal information, gardaí have warned.

“Revolut will never call you out of the blue; genuine support calls only happen through the in-app chat and the call is confirmed in advance,” said Garda Doherty. “They will never ask you to make any payments or ask you to share any verification, PIN numbers, passwords or security codes over the phone. Hang up immediately if a call is unexpected, and report it via the app.”

There are steps you can take if you've fallen victim to this scam and have already shared information and/or made a transfer. Stop all communication with the scammer, secure your account, freeze your card in your Revolut app, report the fraudulent transaction in-app, reach out to Revolut Support via the in-app chat for assistance, and report the matter to Gardaí.
