Pádraig Doherty sat on Donegal County Council for Fine Gael and later as an independent
The death has taken place of former west Donegal county councillor Pádraig Doherty at the age of 82.
A former school teacher from Derrybeg, he sat on the county council for 15 years and was a member of Údarás na Gaeltachta for 26 years.
He was elected to a county council seat in the Glenties area for Fine Gael in 1999 and again in 2004.
After leaving Fine Gael, he successfully contested the 2009 local elections but lost his seat in 2014.
In the same year, he appeared before the Standards in Public Office Commission (Sipo) over allegations around travel and subsistence expenses and was found to be in contravention of the Local Government Act and the Code of Conduct for councillors. He said at the time that the contraventions were “unintentional” and “inadvertent”.
A businessman, he set up Turasmara Teoranta, which began operating the Tory ferry service in 1992.
His funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 11am in The Church of the Sacred Heart in Dunlewey.
