Independent TD calls for action on Post Offices

Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, has called for the publication of an interdepartmental report on post office services and for Government to provide a proper solution for postmasters and local communities.

Addressing Minister Michael McGrath in the Dáil yesterday, Deputy Pringle said: “Yesterday I met with postmasters from across Donegal. These dedicated people, and postmasters indeed around the country, are waiting anxiously for the publication of your interdepartmental group report for the delivery of offline services.”

The deputy raised the issue of the interdepartmental group report on offline services for post offices with Minister McGrath during Questions on Promised Legislation. Deputy Pringle said anticipated dates for the report have come and gone.

Deputy Pringle said: “It was supposed to be announced before Christmas and then in January, which has passed as well.

“It has gotten to the stage now that postmasters are thinking that you want many of them to have already retired or gone out of business before any announcements are made.

“This is one of a long number of reports in relation to the post office service that it seems every government announces that they’re going to bring in, but nothing ever seems to happen,” he said.

The deputy asked: “Will your government publish the report and provide a proper solution for postmasters and local communities?”
