Alan Clancy attended Water Safety Ireland Awards Ceremony in Dublin to be recognised for his Bundoran rescue

A lifesaver has been recognised for his extraordinary bravery after a dramatic sea rescue at Bundoran’s Main Beach in January.

Alan Clancy was honoured after receiving the Just in Time Award at the Water Safety Ireland Awards Ceremony, held at the Mansion House in Dublin on Tuesday, 13th October 2026.

The award recognises Alan's heroic actions during a dramatic sea rescue at Bundoran’s Main Beach on January 15, when his quick thinking and courage helped save the lives of a mother and her young child.

On the day of the incident, Alan witnessed a child being swept towards the sea by a powerful wave. Moments later, the child's mother was also caught in the current.

Without hesitation, Alan entered the water carrying a ring buoy, reaching both mother and child and guiding them safely back to shore.

Alan remained with the child, providing reassurance and care until further assistance arrived.

Shortly afterwards, Trish and Nicky Corr arrived at the scene and provided vital support. Recognising that the child was suffering from the effects of cold exposure, they wrapped her in additional blankets and carried her up the beach, continuing to care for her until emergency services took over.

Thanks to the swift actions, courage and compassion shown by all three, both mother and child made a full recovery.

At the Water Safety Ireland Awards Ceremony, Alan was presented with the Just in Time Award, while Trish and Nicky Corr received Rescue Appreciation Awards in recognition of their important role in the rescue.

Alan's willingness to put himself at risk to help others is a remarkable example of courage, selflessness and community spirit.

A huge congratulations to Alan on this thoroughly deserved honour, and to Trish and Nicky Corr for their invaluable assistance.

Their actions that January day are a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make when every second counts.
