Matthew Friel is the new Clan Wars flyweight champion after his unanimous points win over Joe Beck in Belfast at the weekend.
The title isn’t the Killea native’s first, having previously picked up the Cage Warriors Academy belt as well as the Akuma fly and bantamweight straps in the not too distant past.
“It was a big one,” said Friel (23). “It’s the biggest win so far of my career. Clan Wars is probably the premier domestic MMA company in the country. The goal now is to get another couple of fights under my belt and then look to turn pro”.
Friel - a Computer Science graduate - fights out of Combat Jujitsu in Derry. And with the Real Fighting Championship (FRC) scheduled to hold an event there on Saturday, March 25 at the Templemore Sports Complex, he’s looking forward to the opportunity to showcase his talents in front of family and friends.
“MMA in the north west is really flourishing. It’s an exciting time and I’m loving being part of that. There is a show coming up now in a few weeks’ time in Derry. So it’s great for the local fighters to have that opportunity right on our own doorstep.
“So it’s just a case now of getting the head down and planning towards that”.
