Sinead McConnell celebrates
A new Irish record took Sinead McConnell to a superb World Masters silver medal in the 10k race walk.
Around the streets of Toruń on Friday morning, the Finn Valley AC woman claimed another medal.
The Castlefin woman crossed the line in the W50 race in 56:08, a season’s best and a time that goes as a new national record in the age category.
McConnell was roared on by a large contingent of Irish team-mates and Finn Valley AC colleagues.
A determined McConnell overhauled her old adversary from France, Valérie Boban, to get second with Italian Anna Savarese winning gold in 55:25.
It was double delight for McConnell, who led the Irish to team bronze medals.
It has been a fine week in Poland for McConnell, who ran at a World Cross Country Championships in the 1980s.
On Tuesday, she won bronze in the 3k race walk indoors.
Then, a 15:48.33 represented a second-fastest ever time in that event.
Also on Friday morning, Letterkenny AC’s Kathryn McDevitt clocked 26.98 seconds in her W40 200m semi.
McDevitt was sixth in her semi and missed out on a final berth.
The LAC woman qualified from her heat on Thursday in 27.31 seconds.
She will go to the blocks again on Saturday with a 4x200m relay team that has designs on the podium.
