Mona McSharry of Marlins competes in the Women 13 & Over 50 LC metre breaststroke heats during day three of the Swim Ireland Irish Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin
Ballyshannon Marlins Swim Club’s Mona McSharry set two national records this week at the Irish Open Swimming Championships at National Aquatic Centre in Dublin this week.
The Grange, Co Sligo native, took the 100m breaststroke title in a new Irish standard of 1:06.04 before adding the 50m breaststroke crown. The University of Tennessee swimmer punched a result of 30.29 to take gold, surpassing her previous lifetime best and record of 30.56.
"The 50 is a fun event," she told RTE afterwards. "It just helps me feel connected to my stroke at a higher tempo and that’s a good thing. My plan now is to get the Olympic consideration time at the World Championships in the summer and then it’s a year preparation for Paris 2024 after that."
