Shaun Kerrs and Amy Greene were crowned Donegal Novice Cross Country champions on Sunday in Carndonagh.

Finn Valley were the team winners in both the novice men and novice women’s events in Carndonagh.

Tir Chonaill AC’s Kerrs managed to hold sway in a tight men’s race. The Frosses man dug deep with a strong performance to take gold from Finn Valley AC’s Mark McGinley and Gavin McCullagh, who were on his tail for the duration of the 5k distance.

McGinley cycled from Glenswilly to the venue at Foden, but showed little ill effects as he won individual silver to lead Finn Valley to the team gold with McCullagh in the bronze medal place. They were joined by Ryan Porter and Darren Toland on the winning team.

DCU student Greene broke well clear to win the women’s race and take the first gold of the morning.

The morning sunshine was resting neatly by the time Greene was off for the 3k race. Greene - the Irish junior women’s steeplechase champion in July - won ahead of Bernie Boyle (Rosses) and Jesseka Gallagher (Letterkenny).

The Rosses native paved the way while Nuala Bose (4th), Sinead McDaid (5th) and Karen Gallagher (9th) were the other Finn Valley AC scorers.

The Donegal Even Ages Championships also took place on the day.

Philip McGee from Letterkenny AC surged away from the field to win the under-18 boys gold.

Tir Chonaill AC’s Caolan Gilbride took the bronze with Finn Valley’s Lorcan Byrne earning the third spot on the podium.

Odhran McBrearty powered away on the last lap to take the under-16 boys gold. Olympian AC’s Mouchine Fathoun held sway by inches heading into the last lap, but McBrearty clicked through the gears to maintain his excellent form of late.

In a big race for third, Michael Moore grabbed bronze ahead of Rosses AC’s Odhran Rogers.

Emma Bonar and Anna Russell were an impressive 1-2 for Letterkenny AC in the under-16 girls race. The LAC pair were neck-and-neck for much of the way before Bonar moved into command for gold, while Nia Byrne of Finn Valley took bronze behind Russell.

In all, Finn Valley AC won eight of the team team titles on offer.

That included the under-14 girls, where the first six were all in the blue and white Finn Valley vests, led by Darci Clarke, who was followed by Andrea Reid for silver and Aimee McElchar taking bronze, closely accompanied by Saorla Gilligan in fourth.

The Finn Valley under-12 girls also dominated with Molly Gallagher, Rhia Toner and Caoimhe McElhinney completing the top three and fourth scorer Ciara McCosker finishing fourth.

Rosses AC’s Jack McElroy was a fine winner of the under-14 boys gold ahead of Oisin McBride (Cranford) and Tristan Greene (Rosses).

Cranford had three of the top four in the under-12 boys, with Matthew Giles and Don McGee in the top two and Charlie Rogers in fourth. They were pipped to team gold by Finn Valley, spurred by Dylan Temple in third.
