On a day designed to remember and reflect - and also run - Finn Valley AC hosted its latest Remembrance Run on Sunday.
In spite of the early morning rain spitting down on the Millbrae, almost 500 participants turned out to take part.
Letterkenny AC’s Danny Mooney was the overall winner of the 10k event. Mooney, who compete in the 1500m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, crossed the line in 32 minutes and 43 seconds.
Mooney was just there seconds ahead of fellow Letterkenny AC athlete Eoghain McGinley.
There was little between them as they turned onto the track, Mooney holding sway for the win.
Mark McPaul of Milford AC came home in third, finishing in 33:50.
Finn Valley AC woman Leoni Cooke was the women’s 10k victor. Cooke took victory in 37:50 ahead of Gemma McDonald and Kathryn Gibbons.
Lawrence Moran led the way in the 5k race, pulling clear of Finn Valley AC youngster Lee McGranaghan over the final 1k with Brian Conway third.
Mary Claire O’Donnell was first home in the women’s 5k, winning from Sarah McCosker and and Grace Conway.
Crowds signed the Remembrance Wall, etching the names of loved ones gone but not forgotten.
The names of Alana Harkin and Thomas Gallagher - the Inishowen teenagers killed in the early hours of last Monday morning near Gleneely - were among those written on the wall.
One person penned a tribute to Ashling Murphy, the 23-year-old Offaly woman whose killer Jozef Puška was found guilty of her murder this week, and Jasmine McMonagle, the 28-year-old killed by Richard Burke - now serving a 14-year sentence - in January 2019 in Killygordon.
“Ashling Murphy, Jasmine and all the women killed through violence in Ireland,” the tribute read.
“Remember Creeslough,” another tribute read and there was the name of Rathmullan soccer stalwart Patsy Sheridan, whose funeral was taking place just as the race was coming to a close.
Another recalled Kym Harley, who died in a car crash just around the corner at Dreenan in October 2014, while the family of ‘our wee angel’ paid tribute to Caolan Melaugh, the two-year-old toddler who lost a brave battle with illness in 2019.
Others wore t-shirts bearing names and photos of departed family and friends: The family and friends of Paul ‘Diddler’ Dillon, the popular Newtowncunningham butcher who died of Motor Neurone Disease in 2019, took part; while Finn Valley AC man Kieran Carlin wore a t-shirt bearing an image depicting former Finn Valley athlete Shane Bonner, who died in February 2011 after being struck by a lorry on the outskirts of Letterkenny.
