Donegal athletes Sean McGinley and Lauren Callaghan have been honoured with awards by Dublin City University.

The Finn Valley AC pair were presented with awards at the DCU Athletics Awards for the 2022-23 season.

These awards are usually held after the IUAA Championships in April, but exam commitments delayed this year’s presentations. On campus last week at the 1838 Club, awards were presented by DCUAC Men's Captain Barry Clavin, Women's Captain Niamh O'Neill and Head of DCU Athletics Paul Byrne.

McGinley was presented with the Male Fresher of the Year Award while Callaghan was named as Most Improved Athlete.

McGinley took out a 37-year-old record when winning the 3000m steeplechase at the IUAA Championships in Dundrum. The Glenswilly man clocked 8:56.90 to wipe out Enda Fitzpatrick’s IUAA record of 8:58.70 which stood since 1986.

The time also booked McGinley’s ticket to the European Under-23 Championships.

In January, Callaghan set a new IUAA Indoor long jump record of 6.19m. The jump by the Killygordon woman at the National Indoor Arena came just weeks after she set a new Donegal record of 6.24m when winning gold at the UUJ Jumps and Throws Meet.
