Odhran McBrearty continues medal streak with Ulster Schools' gold

Odhran McBrearty goes for gold.

Odhran McBrearty continued his fine sequence of runs with gold at the Ulster Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships.

McBrearty, a student at St Columba’s College in Stranorlar, won the intermediate boys race at Mallusk on Wednesday.

McBrearty staved off Harry McKenzie of Enniskillen Royal Grammar for the gold.

The Finn Valley AC athlete has been in superb form and maintained his winning streak. Backed up by Paraic McGettigan in 20th, Brian Lyons in 27th and Jamie Gallagher in 29th, McBrearty’s run helped St Columba’s to earn the team silver medals, behind St Michael’s, Enniskillen.

St Columba’s took team gold in the junior girls race.

Aimee McElchar led the charge in fourth, closely followed by Andrea Reid in fifth. Abi McGeehan completed the scoring in 18h with the trio ably backed up by Sophie McGee.

Finn Valley AC athlete Eimear McCarroll, representing Loreto, Omagh was fourth in the senior girls race and in the senior boys Lorcan Byrne was 23rd.

McCarroll suffered a fall with Assumption Grammar School woman Anna Gardiner taking victory.

Sarah Henry from Loreto, Letterkenny was ninth, guiding the Cathedral town school to tam silvers, joined by Sophia Ward in 19th and Keira Keogh in 49th.

Colaiste Ailigh’s Pilib MacAoidh was ninth in the senior boys while St Eunan’s College came in as sixth team as Ciaran Logue (27), Adam McDaid (28), Kieran McFeeley (45) and Caolan Spratt (51) scored.

The St Columba’s College minor girls finished fourth in the team standings with Niamh McGlinchey (10th), Aoibhinn McElhinney (37th) and Aoibheann Gallagher (59th) scoring. In the same race, Letterkenny AC woman Ella Brennan of Loreto, Letterkenny, was 14th.

Jayden Sproule, a Finn Valley athlete running for Omagh Academy was 16th in the junior boys with Michael Donaghey 18th and Mark Alexander 30th, both competing for St Columba’s College and St Columba’s, Glenties’ Simon McHugh came home 11th.

Tristan Greene of Rosses Community School was eighth in the minor boys event with Anna Russell from Loreto, Letterkenny 13th in the intermediate girls.
