Derrveagh Boxing Club had its first Ulster champion crowned at the weekend.

David Tennyson earned the little spot of history for the Gortahork-based club.

At the Ulster 4-7 Championships in the Vale Centre, Derry, Tennyson won the Boy 5 57kgs title.

The son of Derryveagh BC founder and coach, also David Tennyson, he defeated Caoilte Jones from Golden Gloves Kilkeel in the final.

Tennyson did enough to take a narrow win when the sums were counted. Tennyson was the winner thanks to a 3-2 split decision.

Last year, while representing Raphoe BC, he won gold at the HSK Box Cup in Denmark, taking the under-17 lightweight division with a win over Magnus Sorensen at the Royal Stage in Hillerød.

Derryveagh Boxing Club was founded last summer. David Tennyson organised some introductory classes in Gweedore and Falcarragh to aid with the numbers.

He and his son were part of Raphoe BC, but have returned west and put their focus on developing one of Donegal's newest clubs.

Tennyson was one of six Donegal winners in the ring at the weekend with the victors now advancing to the national championships.

Caoimhin Connolly of the Twin Towns Boxing Club, wasted little time in clinching the Boy 5 46kgs title.

Connolly, a winner at the County Antrim Belfast Halloween Box Cup in October, stopped Bryansford's Brandon Scott inside the opening round.

Dunfanaghy Boxing Club's Shaun Doohan clinched the Boy 4 70kgs title in style. Doohan was an excellent victor over Matthew Neill from Dungannon, earning a clean sweep from the judges around the ring.

Doohan's club-mate Jack Boyle won the Boy 5 75kgs title inside the scheduled distance. During the second round, the referee had seen enough and brought Boyle's bout with Clonoe's Ronan Cushanan to a halt.

Ryley Doherty and Rian Patton brought two titles back to Raphoe Boxing Club.

Doherty bagged the Boy 7 title at 57kgs. Doherty was handed a 4-1 decision by the judges in his meeting with Ryan Williamson from Mourne.

Patton was crowned the Boy 6 52kgs champion, also on a 4-1 decision, against Samuel Ximies from Dungannon.

Twin Towns' Brian Anderson was beaten by Two Castles man Ronan McBrearty, who took the Boy 4 57kgs crown via a 4-1 split decision.

Eunan Friel of Twin Towns was stopped by Conan McSorely from Two Castles in the third round of their Boy 4 52kgs final, while Cathoir Keenan, also of Twin Towns, lost out to Jay Fee from Dukes on a slender 3-2 split in the Boy 5 54kgs decider.

In the Boy 6 60kgs final, Portadown boxer Nijas Samatakus stopped Raphoe's Gary McNamara in the second stanza while Raphoe's Jack McElroy suffered defeat on a 4-1 split at the hands of D-Box fighter Jake Daly.

There were defeats cor Carndonagh duo Rocco McDaid and Kyran Kelly to Kajus Dubanovics (Portadown) and Cayden Cummings (Cookstown) in the Boy 4 finals at 60kgs and 63kgs.

Luke Kelly from Dunfanaghy BC went down at the hands of Charlie Mulligan from Cookstown, who claimed a unanimous decision.

There were walkover wins for nine boxers out of Donegal clubs: Taylor Parke (Raphoe, Boy 4 42kgs), Pat Doherty (Illies, Boy 4 80kgs), Kieran Cunningham (Carndonagh, Boy 6 75kgs), Carys McFadden (Dunfanaghy, Girl 4 43kgs), Molly Lafferty (Twin Towns, Girl 4 51kgs), Abbie Harkin (Carrigart, Girl 5 45kgs), Nanci McMonagle (Dunfanaghy, Girl 5 54kgs), Kerry Brown (Convoy, Girl 5 57kgs), Nadine Pearson (St John Bosco, Girl 6 57kgs).
