Matt Edwards and David Moynihan compete in their Ford Fiesta Rall during day two of the Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally

Matt Edwards and David Moynihan continue to lead the Wilton Recycling Donegal International Rally at the end of Day 2 and will take great confidence into tomorrow’s final stages as they hope to win the event for the first time.

In the Ford Fiesta driven by the Welshman, he has a 16.2-second lead over last year’s winner Callum Devine who gained 7.8 seconds on Edwards during Saturday’s final stage around Lough Keel.

Edwards went into the final stages 24 seconds ahead of Devine and his co-driver Noel O’Sullivan in their Skoda R2, but that has now been cut to 16 seconds with last year’s winners producing a great run after they had an unfortunate spin earlier in the day which cost them a serious amount of time.

But with six stages to go tomorrow, they are very much back in the race for the title.

There were some really impressive times over the final stage with Donegal Town’s David Kelly moving into the top five at the end of Day 2 with him taking the honour of the fastest driver in the final stage on his VW Polo.

Merion Evans however, holds third position, overtaking Cathan McCourt and producing a time of 6.04 over Stage 14, and are now 37.7 seconds behind the leaders.

McCourt lost time on the final stage with a time of 6.19 with Kelly trailing behind McCourt by just under nine seconds.

In the two-wheel drive, Kevin Gallagher is having a fantastic event in his Darrian T90 as he holds the position of ninth overall as well as leading the modified section after producing a time of 6.12.09 in the final stages – a time better than the overall leaders – while Declan Gallagher comes up as 11th overall and second in the modified section, but is 19 seconds behind the Rathmullan man in the modified section.

The top 5 at the end of Day 2

1. Matt Edwards 1:36:46.9s

2. Callum Devine +16.2s

3. Merion Evans +53.9

4. Cathan McCourt +59.9

5. David Kelly +1:09.4
