The runners before the Milford 3km

The annual Milford AC 3km Handicap was held on Sunday, bringing together a vibrant mix of 95 participants from across Ireland, including Galway, Monaghan, Omagh, Dublin, and a strong showing from local clubs.

The event was blessed with ideal weather conditions — dry, mild, and calm — setting the stage for a day of competitive and community-driven fun.

The race was run in memory of Sylvester Hiemstra, a cherished Milford AC stalwart and community figure who passed away nearly two years ago at the age of 54. Sylvester’s legacy was honored with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Meadbh, present to make the presentations.

The 3km Handicap is known for its spirited atmosphere, where athletes compete with both determination and a sense of camaraderie. Family and sibling rivalries added to the excitement, especially during the closing stretch of the race. While the event encourages participation for fun, it also offers an opportunity for competitive runners to challenge themselves at a shorter distance.

Fastest Times of the Day

  • Liam Bradley (Inishowen AC, Over-50s): 9:52 – Achieving a personal best by breaking the 10-minute barrier.
  • Shaun Boyce (Milford AC): 9:56 – Personal best, securing the second-fastest time.
  • Dylan Crossan (DSD, aged 13): 10:02 – A remarkable performance for the young athlete.
  • Steven Devlin (Milford AC): 10:07 – Continuing a streak of strong form.
  • Maria McCambridge (DSD): 10:16 – Fastest female time of the day, showcasing her enduring talent.

The event’s success was made possible by the unwavering support of Milford AC’s marshals and helpers, who instinctively turned out to ensure the day ran smoothly. Milford AC extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to the event, keeping the spirit of community and competition alive.
