Finn Valley AC pair Leah O’Gara and Amy Timoney enjoyed success at cross-channel championships over the weekend.

O’Gara won the U17 3,000m race walk at the England Athletics Championships on Sunday while Timoney was victorious in the U20 60m hurdles at the Scottish Championships on Saturday.

O’Gara clocked 16:10.46 to win in Sheffield.

The Termon teenager, who is a student at Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny, might be a relative newcomer to take walking, but a time of 25:45 over 5k in December, at the final leg of the World Athletics Race Walking Tour in Dublin, outlined possibilities.

O’Gara could well have a European U18 qualification in her sights this year.

She won from Tuam’s Taillte O’Callaghan in Sheffield while O’Gara’s club mate Aoife McGranaghan crossed the line in a new PB of 19:02.32 to finish sixth in the same race.

On Saturday, Timoney won at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow going 9.25 seconds for victory in the U20 60m hurdles, ahead of Darcie Black of Dunfermline (9.44) and Livingstone’s Alannah Snowden Livingston (9.50).
