Defeat for Jordan Furey and Ireland in MMA Super Cup final

Ireland go down to host nation Bahrain, but win €68,000 as the silver medalists

There was defeat for Jordan Furey and Ireland in Saturday’s MMA Super Cup final in Bahrain.

Host nation Bahrain won the inaugural MMA Super Cup after a clean sweep (9-0) against Ireland at Khalifa Sports City.

Furey lost out to Magomed Isaev in their welterweight bout, the sixth contest of the final.

Isaev submitted the Letterkenny man in the opening round.

Furey had beaten Mitchell Kelly in a quarter-final on Wednesday. During a 5-4 win for Ireland over Oceania Champions, Furey stopped Kelly in the first verse.

In the semi-final, Furey overcame Israel Salcido Rodriguez of Mexico. Furey stopped Rodriguez via ground n pound to help Ireland win 5-3.

As the silver medalists, Ireland collected a cool €68,000 with Bahrain netting €91,000. It was the largest purse ever available for an amateur mixed martial arts event.
