Fintan Dewhirst
Fintan Dewhirst has qualified for the European Under-18 Athletics Championship.
Dewhirst won gold in the under-18 110m and 400m hurdles at the Ulster underage championships at the Antrim Forum on Sunday.
In the 400m hurdles, Dewhirst sped home in a new personal best time of 54.50 seconds.
The Tir Chonaill AC star raced clear to beat off competition from Ballymena and Antrim AC’s Adam Courtney, whose silver-winning time of 57.16 seconds was also a new PB.
The performance saw Dewhirst seal qualification for the European Under-18s, which take place at the Hebrew University Stadium in Jerusalem next month.
Dewhirst also took gold in the under-18 110m hurdles, winning in 15.68 seconds, staving off the efforts of Lifford-Strabane AC’s Finn O’Neill, who crossed the line in 16.27 seconds.
This weekend, Dewhirst - a student at St Columba’s Comprehensive in Glenties - will compete in an under-18 international meet in Franconville, France.
