Mona McSharry advances to 100m breaststroke semi-finals in Rome

Mona McSharry has booked her place in he semi-finals of the 100m breaststroke at the 2022 LEN European Aquatics Championships.

McSharry and Irish team-mate Niamh Coyne both came safely through their semi-finals at the Fore Italico in Rome.

McSharry was fifth fastest, going 1:07.30 with Coyle clocking 1:08.11.

The Marlin’s Swimming Club graduate will also take part in the 50m and 200m breaststroke events.

The north-west's golfing fraternity will have a considerable interest in the Men’s and Women’s Interprovincial Matches later this month at Moyvalley Hotel & Golf Resort with Ryan Griffin and Cian Harkin's included on the eight-man Ulster team

Last year, McSharry, who hails from Grange in north County Sligo, reached the 100m breaststroke final at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, finishing eighth. She was the first Irish swimmer since Michelle Smith in 1996 to reach an Olympic final.

The 21-year-old, a student at University of Tennessee, ended 2021 with a bronze medal at the World Short-Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, claiming third in the 100m breaststroke final.
