Fintan Dewhirst leads the way for Donegal athletes at multi events

Fintan Dewhirst, Alannah Anderson and Emer McFadden were the Donegal victors at the Ulster Schools Multi Events finals at the Antrim Forum with other notable results recorded

European Under-18 silver medalist Fintan Dewhirst won the intermediate boys competition at the Ulster Schools Multi Events finals at the Antrim Forum.

The Glenties native, who took 400m silver at the European Under-18s in Jerusalem, edged out Finn O’Neill for the multi events gold.

Tir Chonaill AC’s Dewhirst, a Tir Chonaill AC athlete who attends St Columba's Comprehensive, finished with 3,491 points.

Limavady Grammar student O’Neill, who competes out of Lifford-Strabane AC, wasn’t far behind, ending on 3,454 points.

Dewhirst won the 100m hurdles in 12.5 seconds with O’Neill finishing in 13.7 seconds. Dewhirst was the victor in the 200m in 22.5 seconds from O’Neill, who timed 23.4 seconds.

While Dewhirst had the edge in the long jump, going out to 6.05m with O’Neill having a best of 5.92m, it was O’Neill who had the better in the shot put (13.11m) and 800m (2:04.8).

Ethan Dewhirst, Fintan’s younger brother, was third, scoring 2,670 points.

The top four qualify for the All-Ireland competition which takes place in Athlone on November 7 with places up for grabs for the Ireland team that will take part in an international in Glasgow before Christmas.

Abbey Vocational School student and Tir Chonaill AC athlete Alannah Anderson was the winner of the minor girls event, chalking up 2,324 point.

Anderson jumped 4.32m in the long jump and 1.45m in the high jump. She clocked 13.3 seconds for the 75m hurdles and threw a fine 9.78m shot, ending with a 3:05.2 800m.

Crana College’s Emer McFadden won the junior girls competition from Emily Kelly, a Tir Chonaill AC athlete and St Columba’s, Stranorlar student.

McFadden leaped to 4.50m in the long jump, went over the high jump at 1.36m and had a shot put best of 10.56m.

McFadden crossed the line in the 75m hurdles in 13.3 seconds and concluded with a 2:48.8 800m to score 2,551 points with Kelly finishing on 2,257.

Lifford-Srabane AC’s Ashleigh McArdle was third in the intermediate girls event, scoring 2,879 points. The Holy Cross, Strabane student had a 4.35m long jump, a 1.54m and threw a 11.38 shot.

McArdle ran a 2:56.0 800m and timed 12 seconds in the 80m hurdles.

Conor McCahill of Abbey VS was second in the junior boys’ event when scoring 3,043 points.
