Heather Harron, Laghey Badminton Club, is a national champion, following her doubles success at the Carlton Irish Masters Championship staged in Dublin last weekend.

Heather and her playing partner, Imelda Breen, claimed the title at the Championships in the over 50s category in Sunday’s final in Baldoyle.

“We were delighted with the win after missing the competition last year. I was injured last year so we did not take part,” said Heather.

“We have been playing partners for the last three years and have won championships before in different categories. This is a new championship this year with new sponsors and it was a good championship to win.”

The Donegal/Meath combination won the title with two straight wins over Christine Graham and Doreen McClements.

They were comfortable 21-17 winners of the first game but were pushed all the way in the second game before emerging 27-25 winners.

In the deciding game they defeated Cherry Stanbridge and Fran Walsh in two close games to clinch the title.

They were the sole Irish winners on day three of the championships which was played in a round robin format. Heather, who is Principal of the Glebe National School in Donegal Town, has a rich pedigree in badminton, winning many titles over the years.
