Cockhill Celtic advanced to their first ever FAI Intermediate Cup semi final with a brilliant 3-0 win over Drumcondra FC in Dublin.

The Inishowen men were the better team throughout but it took until the second half before they turned their dominant level of possession into goals.

Luke Rudden went close early on before Lee McLaughlin's far post header across goal, from a right wing free kick, narrowly evaded Adam McCarron.

On 20 minutes, good interplay down the left between Fionn McClure and Lee McColgan found the arriving Corey McBride whose effort was well saved.

Soon after, Garbhan Friel was played in over the top but his shot was easily gathered by the Drumcondra goalkeeper.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot and won a penalty in the opening minute when McBride's through ball found Rudden but he was fouled just as he was about to pull the trigger. Lee McColgan kept his nerve and stepped up to fire low and into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

Cockhill doubled their lead on 51 minutes when McBride advanced through the inside left channel, before drawing the goalkeeper. And at just the right moment, he squared for Rudden to slot home.

Cockhill were dominant and could have added further goals. Friel was played through on goal and even though he managed to round the home stopper, his effort came back off the post from the acute angle.

Minutes later he was again denied the goal his performance deserved by a brilliant reaction save before his hold-up play released Rudden but his shot clipped the bar.

Drumcondra tried to respond but the Cockhill defence, well marshalled by Lee McLaughlin and Peter Doherty, were in no mood to let their lead slip.

Celtic made it 3-0 three minutes out from time when substitute Adam McLaughlin fired an unstoppable shot to the top corner.

Cockhill now advance to the semi finals where they’ll play Ringmahon Rangers away from home.

Cockhill Celtic: H Doherty; L McColgan, P Doherty, L McLaughlin, K Hegarty; J Bradley, A McCarron; F McClue, C McBride, L Rudden; G Friel.
