Amber Barrett says it was “a dream come true” to get the chance to represent the Republic of Ireland at the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Milford native Barrett was a 65th-minute substitute on Wednesday in a match where Katie McCabe put Ireland in front from a fourth-minute corner kick before Megan Connolly's own goal and Adriana Leon to give Canada a 2-1 win. The result means Vera Pauw’s side were eliminated.

“A lifetime waiting on something that ends so untimely,” Barrett posted on Instagram afterwards. “A dream come true to represent my country in a World Cup game, a moment that I will never forget.

"The roar from the Irish fans when Katie McCabe sent us into wild jubilation, is something I will never forget. We still have one more step to make on this World Cup journey and we want to give something back to without any doubt, the best fans in the world.”

Ireland round off their campaign against Nigeria in Brisbane on Monday.
