Ryan Rainey has been officially confirmed as the new Finn Harps captain.

Rainey succeeds Keith Cowan, who left the club last week, in wearing the armband.

Cowan departed and has signed for NIFL Championship side Dergview with Rainey returning from injury on Friday for the 2-2 draw with Galway United.

Rainey joined Harps from his native Bonagee United in January 2021 having been on the books of Wolverhampton Wanderers as a youth.

Now in his third campaign at Harps, Rainey spent three months on the sidelines with an injury, but played the 90 minutes and it took a fine stop by Galway ‘keeper Brendan Clarke to prevent him from scoring in the second half.

“I’m delighted for Ryan Rainey,” Harps manager Dave Rogers said.

“He has been out for around 12 weeks. We have got him fit in training and we’ve got minutes under his belt.

“Ryan is a real stalwart here and he loves the club. I thought his professionalism and his game management was outstanding.”

The recently-returned Tony McNamee has been installed as the new vice-captain.
