Ballybofey teenager Mark Mbuli scored twice on Saturday as Institute began their NIFL Championship campaign with a win while Dergview, with a large Donegal presence, were narrowly beaten.
Mbuli netted twice in the second half as Institute, under returned manager Kevin Deery, defeated Knockbreda at the Brandywell.
The 18-year-old had spells with Finn Harps and Derry City at underage level before moving to ‘Stute.
Convoy’s Michael Harris, a recent signing from Harps, and goalkeeper Dylan Doherty from Moville were also included in the ‘Stute XI while Carndonagh’s Evan Tweed was an unused substitute.
At Darragh Park, Dergview - backed by a sizeable Donegal contingent - were edged out 3-2 by Portadown.
Former Finn Harps captain Keith Cowan started at the heart of the Dergview rearguard having signed from Finn Harps during the week.
He was joined by his fellow former Harps stalwart Gareth Harkin as well as Dungloe’s Paddy McGarvey, Jack Parke from Glenmaquin and Tiernan Brown from Manor in the starting XI.
The Black twins from Kilmacrennan, Conor and Stpehen, came on as substitutes for Tommy Canning’s side.
Gareth Falconer had Dergview ahead, but Caolin Coyle equalised late in the first half before Eamon Fyfe and Paul McElroy had the Ports in control. Thomas Mullen hit a late consolation goal for Dergview.
