Jason Gibson says Bonagee United have to earn their corn in Division One of the Donegal Junior League.
Any feelings that the former Ulster Senior League Cup winners and title-chasers would have delusions of grandeur in their new surroundings have been swiftly rebuffed by the Bonagee manager.
Jordan Armstrong and Deano Larkin hit the goals on Friday as they began the 2023/24 season with a 2-0 win over the just-promoted Gweedore United.
“I stressed to the boys that, as much as we felt that we shouldn’t be in the First Division, that there are no airs or graces with us,” Gibson told Donegal Live.
“I warned them about acting the big shots. We have to respect every opposition we have. That’s the least that’s expected here at Bonagee United. It’s Bonagee United we’re playing for so we need to have a bit of manners and respect the Division we’re in.
“You have to earn it. There’ll be some tough battles in this Division and it will bring a lot of challenges. Promotion is an expectation, but it won’t be handed to us.
“Letterkenny, I think, will be a bit stronger because they didn’t lose the same numbers as we did, but there’s a long way to go yet; a full season.”
Some stout Gweedore defending and a little profligacy in the Bonagee attack had the stalemate intact at half-time. Nine minutes into the second half. Armstrong broke the deadlock and Larkin copper fastened the win in the 79th minute.
Gibson said: “There was frustration there at times. We didn’t take a couple of decent chances in the first half. Gweedore were always in the game and even at 1-0 they would’ve been thinking they could nick one. We had spells of frustration, but we’ve got three points.
“Sometimes when you’re in control, you can get too comfortable and switch off. That was the worry. That first goal took the edge off us a bit.
“We expected to win the game and that brings its own pressure. We’ve a lot of new lads and it will take time.”
