Cockhill Celtic advanced to the next round of the FAI Junior Cup after an absorbing victory over Laois outfit Arlington AFC.

Cockhill went into the game as favourites and justified that tag very early on with the amount of possession they enjoyed.

They’d hit the front foot on 24 minutes when Garbhan Friel diverted a right wing Lee McColgan corner to the net.

In a rare foray forward, an Arlington free kick was accompanied by a booking for McColgan who then received a second yellow for protesting the decision.

Arlington tails were up and they had a spell of possession without testing Harry Doherty in the corner goal.

Cockhill started the second half purposefully looking to bring the game to the visitors and dominated proceedings, sealing the tie with two quickfire goals midway through the half.

Corey McBride's free kick from an inside left position found Lee McLaughlin who stretched to finish expertly from close range.

Minutes later Friel got his second after a clever run onto a great Luke Rudden pass was matched by a smart finish to seal Cockhill's progress.
