Donegal Town FC captain Eoin Slevin praised his side after they put six goals past neighbours Letterbarrow in what was a facile 6-0 win for them in the Brian McCormack Cup.

“We didn’t really know what to expect because we played them back in September and won 5-0 at home, but then when we played them away in November their side really improved,” said the Donegal Town captain.

“So, we knew we really had to be on our guard, but I think our strong performance today reflects our season ambitions.

“But in fairness we played really well on the day. We’re having a great season in the league and we are really pushing for promotion back to the Premier Division.

“The Cup gives us an opportunity to play more games and learn, but overall, we couldn’t be happier with the season.

The Town netted three times in each half and overall had it all their own way against a side that is struggling for form and who are currently sitting at the bottom of the league with only two points.

Ben Sweeney opened the scoring on 10 minutes from a superb ball in by Declan Duignan who would find the net himself for the second goal, before Mark Jordan calmly slotted home for his side’s third goal to make the game as good as done after only 33 minutes.

But the Town didn’t stop there and kept their dominance in the second half with three more goals from Joe Campbell, Jordan with his second, before David Graham slotted home his side’s sixth and final goal on the 89th minute.

As they sit on top of the league on 27 points from 11 matches, the Town couldn’t be happier with their season to date, but Slevin knows there is still more work to do.

“If you look at the league Letterkenny Rovers are on 25 points but have only played nine games,” said Slevin.

“We have to keep performing, we have Cappry Rovers in two weeks, we still have to play Letterkenny Rovers away, these aren’t easy fixtures. But on today, it’s great to get such a strong win and keep our ambitions in the Cup alive for another while.”
