Mark Coyle has been named the new captain of Shelbourne
Donegal-born midfielder and former Finn Harps player Mark Coyle has been announced as the new Shelbourne captain for the 2024 season.
Coyle, who signed for the Tolka Park side in 2022, penned a new contract with the Dublin-based team last July, extending his stay with the Reds until the end of the upcoming campaign.
“It’s a bit surreal to be honest. I’m hugely honoured and proud, my family is proud as well,” the 26-year-old said, following the announcement that he will lead Damien Duff’s side who finished fourth last season, 12 points behind winners Shamrock Rovers.
“To be captain of this huge football club . . . it’s just a massive honour.
“I didn’t see it coming but I don’t really get ahead of myself in that sense. Either way, if I got it, if I didn’t get it, it wasn’t going to change who I am or how I approach this season and the work I put in.
“It’s always the team first for me and it’s my job to make sure I’m at the best of my ability for the team.” said the 2021 Finn Harps Player of the Year.
Despite facing injury challenges during his early days at Shels, the Donegal man made 27 appearances last term - 24 of them as a starter.
With the Burt native taking on the armband from the recently retired Luke Byrne, Shelbourne manager Duff stated that Coyle "represents everything the club is about".
“I am very proud to announce Mark as our new captain. He commands respect from the dressing room, the terrace and the league. He represents everything this club is about. Being selfless, humble and hard working."
Speaking last July, the Donegal man expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm when signing his contract extension until the end of 2024.
“I am thrilled to extend my contract for another year. Since arriving at Tolka, I've received a warm welcome. The decision to sign on for another year was incredibly straightforward. I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunity to continue donning the Shels jersey."
Shelbourne will open their 2024 League of Ireland campaign away to newly promoted side Waterford on February 16 before welcoming Dublin rivals Shamrocks Rovers the following week.
