Bonagee United overcame Ballyraine FC whilst Kilmacrennan Celtic earned a useful point against Drumbar in the two fixtures contested in the Colin Breslin Cup on Wednesday.
Bonagee United 4
Ballyraine 1
Bonagee booked their place in the semi-final of the Colin Bresslin cup with a comprehensive 4 -1 win over Ballyraine at Goose Green on Wednesday evening.
Ballyraine had the best of the early exchanges and on five minues rattled the Bonagee crossbar, when Ben Cassidy shot from the edge of the box. This seemed to wake Bonagee up and on nine minutes they had the lead with a Josh Maxwell tap in at the back post.
Ballyraine hit back immediately, with a fine headed goal from the lively Danny Hall, who caused the Bonagee trouble all evening. Bonagee dominated the rest of this half and got their reward on 38 mins when Zak Breen hit a screamer from 25 yards into the top corner to make it 2-1.
Bonagee kept the pressure on and were clinical in scoring a further two goals to finish the half with a well-deserved three-goal half-time lead. A side footed shot from six yards from Adam Carr and a bicycle kick from Leon Boyce had the Dry Arch men going in with their tails up.
The second half brought few chances with both teams cancelling each other out, but Ballyraine side never stopped working, but just couldn’t threaten Matthew Gibson in the Bonagee goal. A Danny Harkin shot over the bar for Ballyraine and a shot wide from Dean Johnston for Bonagee were the only clear chances in this half. This was game played with great tempo throughout and was a great spectacle for the large crowd gathered for this local derby.
Kilmacrennan Celtic 3
Drumbar United 3
A six-goal thriller at the Letterkenny Community Centre on Wednesday evening saw Kilmacrennan Celtic recover from a 3-0 interval deficit to claim what could be a valuable point in Group A of the Colin Breslin Cup.
Senan Carr, with a penalty fired, the visitors ahead before efforts from Liam Gallagher had Drumbar cruising. Kilmacrennan to their credit stormed back in a high octane second half and goals from Rory McGrenra, Cormac Brady and Cian McMenamin saw them gain a point which could be crucial when the top two in the group are decided.
