Donegal Town County Councillor, Tom Conaghan, who is also the Cathaoirleach of the Donegal Municipal District has asked for the possibility of carrying out a review on all speed limits in Donegal Town, in particular in the vicinity of the Abbey Vocational school and all primary schools in the area".
In a reply from the Area Roads engineer, at the December meeting of the MD, he was told that both areas mentioned are within the urban area which has a 50 kph speed limit, but there was potential for it to be significantly reduced in early 2024, if approved by Cabinet.
Mark Sweeney, Acting Area Manager for Roads and Transportation said:
“A Speed Limit Review is currently ongoing and there will be a public consultation for the speed limit review in early 2024 subject to elected member approval.
“New speed limit review submissions will be accepted as part of the upcoming public consultation.
“Note however there is a pending national review on speed limits and I understand that this is before the Cabinet at present and my understanding is that in urban areas the
proposal is to reduce the speed limit form 50kph down to 30kph in built up areas like town centres and housing estates.
“Subject to cabinet approval, a new set of Department of Transport Guidelines would
then be created and issued for future Speed Limit Reviews.
“This would see potential for a significant change in speed limit for Donegal Town,” Mr Sweeney explained.
