Ballyshannon is hosting this year's St Patrick's Day Parade in celebration of William Allingham.
This year marks the historical figure's 200th birthday. The parade will be all about William Allingham having this year's parade theme all about his works as a poet.
“We have so much heritage and history in our town,” Ballyshannon St Patrick's Day Parade shared. “We can enjoy celebrating more of what we have on our doorstep during Ballyshannon St Patrick's Day Parade.
“William Allingham wrote so many playful and evocative poems. We are looking forward to seeing all the creative floats at this year's parade when we celebrate his 200th Birthday.
“Have a look as you explore the town of Ballyshannon for the house where William Allingham was born. I bet you probably have gone past it a few times a week.”
This year's Ballyshannon St Patrick's Day Parade will take place on Sunday, March 17 at 2pm. You can register your float here.
William Allingham (1824-1889) was a poet and diarist from Ballyshannon. His most famous works include The Fairies; After Sunset; Day and Night Songs; Autumnal sonnet; and Laurence Bloomfield in Ireland to name a few.
William Allingham also published ‘Diary’ which is a collection of accounts of his vibrant interactions with authors and artists. The ‘Diary’ is one of his most well-known works and it was published after his death.
