As part of the Donegal Town 550 programme, historians Helen Meehan MA and Dr Matthew Potter are organising Donegal Town 550: History and Remembrance.

This is a free one-day history conference on Saturday, August 24 in the Central Hotel, Donegal Town. The theme will be the history of the county with an emphasis on Donegal Town.

In 1474, Lady Nuala O'Donnell established a Franciscan Abbey on the shores of Donegal Bay while at the same time, her husband Red Hugh O'Donnell the First, Lord of Tir Chonaill founded Donegal Castle. From 1474 onwards, the town of Donegal grew up around these two great buildings.

The conference features eight talks by experts in their field on various aspects of Donegal Town’s history from prehistoric times to the present.  There will also be a free guided tour of Donegal Abbey by Seamus O’Doherty at 11am on the following day, Sunday, August 25.

Donegal Town 550: History and Remembrance is funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, under its programme to support commemorative initiatives in 2024.

Organisers wish to thank Judith McCarthy, Curator of Donegal County Museum and Decade of Centenaries Coordinator, Donegal County Council for obtaining this funding for the conference.

The Donegal Town 550: History and Remembrance conference is free of charge. To make a booking, contact Dr Matthew Potter at 085 7357436 or potterismatthew@gmail.com
