Walkers are preparing to lace up their boots for a special 15th anniversary mountain trek in Inishowen.

The Hike of Hope on Sunday, June 1, is an annual family-friendly challenge walk up 1,500 feet Scalp Mountain, in support of humanitarian aid charity Concern Worldwide and organised by its Derry support group.

Thanks to the generosity of the Scalp Mountain trail owners, Henry and Michael McLaughlin and the family, the walk is now in
its 15th year and is as popular as ever.

Michael McLaughlin said: “We are always delighted to host this walk every year. We are used to life on the mountain, but this event gives people a chance to appreciate our amazing countryside and enjoy the incredible, not-seen-by-many views.”

As access to the route is on private land, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of Derry City, Buncrana, Lough Foyle, Lough Swilly and Inch Island, as well as supporting communities in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Leading the way this year will be members of Concern’s volunteer group in Derry. Mick Conway, a long-term Concern supporter said: “This year, we’ve placed a special emphasis on family participation in support of millions of displaced families around the world currently living in camps due to conflict.

“Many families have taken part in previous years, and we have always been especially impressed with the number of younger children taking on the challenge for a good cause.”

Seven-year-old Aidan Conway, who’s Mick’s grandson, said: “My brother Patrick and my cousins from Belfast have done the walk up the mountain many times. Last year, was my turn for the first time. I was a bit nervous at the start but in the end, I found it was not too tough, and I was very excited about going into the clouds.”

Alongside the health benefits of the walk, a highlight this year will be a special kite-flying session on the summit, with free kites provided for children.

Isabel Brennen, Concern’s Community Fundraising Executive, said: “Right now millions of people around the world have been displaced because of conflict. We can do something positive and show that we care. So why not join us for a fantastic family day out and hike with us for hope? Gather up your family and friends and be part of something meaningful.”
