The gathering will offer a unique opportunity for the public to engage with the history of the Gaeltacht movement through the lens of the Conradh na Gaeilge Archive
An exciting cultural and historical event is set to take place as part of this year’s Gaeltacht Assembly, with the Conradh na Gaeilge Archive hosting a two-day programme on Thursday 19 and Friday, June 20.
The event will open on the evening of the 19th at Ionad Teampall Chróine and continue the following afternoon at An Chultúrlann on Árainn Mhór.
The gathering will offer a unique opportunity for the public to engage with the history of the Gaeltacht movement through the lens of the Conradh na Gaeilge Archive. Thursday night’s programme will centre on the Gaeltacht campaigns of the 1970s and beyond, featuring a panel discussion chaired by well-known broadcaster Áine Ní Bhreisleáin.
The panel will include prominent Gaeltacht figures such as Lillis Ó Laoire, Clíona Ní Ghallachóir, Seanán Mac Aoidh, and Aindriú de Buitléir. Drawing on archival documents, letters, and personal testimonies, they will reflect on key moments of activism and community mobilisation, while asking a powerful question: “Have things changed since then, or are we still fighting the same old battle?”
Friday’s event will shift to Árainn Mhór, where poet and academic Proinsias Mac a’ Bhaird will deliver a special poetry reading. His work, inspired by his own research in the Conradh na Gaeilge Archive, brings a creative and deeply personal response to the themes explored in the panel discussion.

The event, organised in partnership with Baile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta an Chlocháin Léith, promises to be a moving and insightful experience for anyone interested in the story of the Gaeltacht. The archives, housed at Galway University, are supported through funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
All are welcome to attend, and organisers hope the event will not only honour the past but also spark conversation about the future of Irish-speaking communities.
