Born on June 25, 1925, Ellen Harkin, as she was then, was the oldest of eight children and the only one remaining alive today.
She left Donegal to go to the UK after the Second World War and was a nanny on Merseyside and then became a seamstress and dressmaker on the famous Matthew Street in Liverpool.
Ellen met her husband David Griffiths and spent most of her adult life in the UK. When her husband passed away in 1983 unexpectedly, she returned to Donegal and built herself a house next to the family home.
She never had any children but has an extended family with 21 nieces and nephews, three of whom are local, with the rest scattered around the world. Ellen drove a 1975 Austin Allegro and used to love to go to Mountcharles pier. She is a huge animal lover and has had many labradors and cats throughout her life. In 2019, moved into Harbour Lights in Killybegs and has become a huge part of the family there, where she is frequently visited by friends and family members, even those who are back in Donegal from overseas.
